Staples Boys Soccer Ties Darien in Last Second Thriller

Daniel Perez Elorza (above, battling Darien center back Andrew Mathew) fed Jack Zeldes for Staples’ first goal today, against Darien at Loeffler Field. The Blue Wave –- who eliminated the Wreckers in last year’s state tournament –- tied the match, but Graham Gudis’ penalty kick gave Staples the lead with nine minutes to play. The visitors got a goal off Mathew’s throw-in with just five seconds remaining, to earn a thrilling 2-2 tie. Staples, now 6-1-3, travels to New Canaan’s Conner Field on Monday for a 4 p.m. match.
