Wet, muddy but happy, the Westport’s Staples High School boys soccer team defeated St. Joseph 3-0 this afternoon.
The Cadets’ field was nearly unplayable, with numerous lakes and ruts, but the Wreckers adapted well to the conditions. Now 2-0-0, they entertain Darien in their home opener on Tuesday. Kickoff is 4 p.m.
The first goal came a minute before the end of the first half. Nicky Hoberman blasted a shot through a crowd, and Brendon Cristobal ran on to finish.
Staples wore down their hosts in the second half, and tallied twice midway through. Matt Lamb’s long cross was headed in by Matt Sych; then Brendon Cristobal rebounded in Lamb’s direct kick.
“The conditions were abysmal, and sometimes that hurts a talented team,” said head coach Dan Woog. “But we adapted intelligently and well. If we can get a good result on a day like this, that says a lot about our guys.”
