The Staples boys soccer team stunned undefeated, unscored-upon Greenwich with three first-half goals today, en route to a 3-1 victory at Albie Loeffler Field in Westport.
The win, in the Wreckers’ third game in five days, ups their record to 3-0-1. On Monday they start another tough week with an away match at St. Joseph (3:45 p.m.).
All three goals featured fine teamwork. The first, in the 23rd minute, began when feisty midfielder Matt Lamb headed the ball forward to Chris Meinke, who laid off to Charlie Reiter.
The junior playmaker quickly fed classmate Ross McGibney, who easily touched it home.
Eleven minutes later Jon Zimmerman unleasehd a long throw McGibney. He found Meinke running on, for a second tally.
Then, a minute before halftime, Reiter drove a dangerous corner kick into the box. Zimmerman touched it along, and McGibney popped out of the crowd to tuck it in.
The second half was less dramatic. Greenwich’s scored in the 49th minute, off a series of headers, and the 85-degree weather took its toll on both teams. But the Wreckers continued to control the match.
Zimmerman and Reiter commanded midfield, while defenders Matt Geringer, Dave King, Nick Renzulli, Colin Nangle and Lee Solomon also took charge.
