The win – before a raucous Wrecker crowd at Fairfield Ludlowe High School – propelled Staples into the FCIAC finals.
The Wreckers will try for their second league championship in three years at 7 p.m. Wednesday night at Norwalk High School. Their opponent is Greenwich High.
After an evenly played, scoreless first half, Staples took command. Fifteen minutes into the second half, sophomore Brendan Lesch raced down the right sideline. Beating several defenders, he turned inside, then scored on a 20-yard blast.
Energized, the Wreckers scored again one minute later. Junior Mike White turned three defenders around in the corner, then fed senior Jairo Alvarado waiting patiently six yards from goal.
Two minutes after that, junior Matteo Marzoli sliced a free kick from the left side. White sliced through, and one-touched his shot home.
“Our defense – including keeper Adam Liu, plus backs Jack Hennessy, Frankie Rende, Frankie Bergonzi, Alan Reiter and Mikey Fitzgerald were keys in the second half,” head coach Dan Woog said.
“This was truly a team win. I’m happy for our guys. They’re young, passionate, quick and fun. And now they’re getting ready for Greenwich.”
