Staples Boys Soccer Shuts Out Norwalk

Eleven months ago, Norwalk ended the Staples boys soccer team’s season with a 1-0 defeat in the state tournament. The fact that the Bears went on to win the state championship was little solace.

Today, a packed hill at Loeffler Field watched as the Wreckers gained revenge. They shut out Norwalk 2-0, with a solid performance that included a spectacular volley by co-captain Jack Scott.

Staples ran its record to 8-1-1. The Wreckers are off until Wednesday, when they host Trumbull at 4 p.m.

Scott’s volley, in the 76th minute, came off a long cross from Nate Argosh, in the left corner. Scott never hesitated, banging the ball home on the fly.

Scott had a foot in the first tally too. His intense pressure at midfield won the ball, just eight minutes in. His breakaway shot was parried by keeper Tyler Dalton. But Charlie Leonard crashed the box, and rammed home the rebound.

Staples got excellent defense from Andrew Puchala, George Kokkalis, James Lewis and Kenji Goto. Leonard moved back to secure the line, and also contributed solidly to keeper Noah Schwaeber’s shutout.
