Staples Boys Soccer Shuts Out Danbury

Keaton Cristobal’s goal with less than five minutes remaining lifted the Staples boys soccer team to a 1-0 victory today over Danbury at the losers’ field.

The victory gave the Wreckers (now 9-3-2) an important lift in their drive for an FCIAC playoff berth. At the same time, it knocked the Hatters out of contention for the state tournament.

Cristobal slotted the ball past the keeper after Ross McGibney’s pass was deflected wide by a defender. The game’s other hero was Brad Green, the reserve goalkeeper who, in his second straight start, turned away several tough chances and earned his second consecutive shutout.

Staples’ third game in three days is set for 3:45 p.m. Friday at Ridgefield. Like the others this week, it is a must-win for the Wreckers’ league playoff hopes.
