Everything went right for Newtown—ranked eighth in the nation—and nothing went right for Staples tonight, in the state LL soccer tournament semifinal in Danbury.
The Nighthawks got two goals in the first half, then tightened the noose in the second half en route to a 7-1 win.
“I feel like General Custer,” Staples head coach Dan Woog said. “They did to us what we’ve done to other teams all year long. They hammered us.
“But I told our guys at the end of the game: I’d rather be with you than with any other team.
“I’m proud of all you accomplished this year. We end the season with no excuses, and no regrets.”
“Staples finished its season with a 15-3-2 record. Newtown advances to the finals, against either Norwalk or Farmington.

Boys, thanks for all the thrills and excitement this year. You each played with heart and soul every time you took the field, but most importantly, you played and supported each other as a team. Be proud of your many accomplishments—- we all certainly are.
On behalf of all your parents.
