It’s becoming the storyline of a very successful season: the Staples boys soccer team overcomes injuries, pounces for an opportunistic goal, locks down on defense, and wins a one-goal game.

Wilton was the latest victim. The Wreckers prevailed 1-0 today in an exciting match at the Warriors’ Kristine Lilly Field. They raise their record to 5-1-1, while Wilton drops to 4-2-0.
Co-captain Jack Scott returned from a four-game injury absence. His pressure produced the lone goal, in the 19th minute. Michael Reid’s corner kick bounced around the box. Andrew Puchala’s shot was denied, but Scott was perched in front, and banged the ball home.
This was Staples’ first match without stellar defender Connor Weiler (hamstring). They also lost co-captain Diego Alanis early (ankle).
But Puchala, Charlie Leonard, Kenji Goto and George Kokkalis held the fort defensively. Michael Reid ran midfield, and Nate Argosh and Andreas Bru provided sparks off the bench up top.
“This team combines heart, tenacity and talent in a great way,” said head coach Dan Woog. “It doesn’t matter who is out there, or in what position. Our guys believe in themselves, and believe in our system. If they keep working hard, improving and grinding it out, that will take them a long way.”
Staples’ next action is Saturday, at 11 a.m. Brien McMahon comes to Loeffler Field.
