Staples Boys Soccer Falls to Trumbull 2-0 in FCIAC Final

There is no four-peat for the Staples boys soccer team.

Trumbull topped the Wreckers 2-0 in the FCIAC final tonight at Fairfield Ludlowe High School.

Staples was aiming for its fourth straight league title, and 28th overall.  But a pair of first-half goals earned the Golden Eagles the win.

It was Trumbull’s second crown, after they drew 0-0 with Staples in 2006.

The Golden Eagles – seeded second in the tournament—scored in the 23rd minute, then 2:26 before halftime.

In between, Staples’ Joe Greenwald tallied what appeared to be the equalizer, off a corner kick.  But the officials ruled otherwise, and play continued.

The fourth-seeded Wreckeres applied plenty of pressure in the final 20 minutes, but had no dangerous shots.

“Trumbull is fast, strong and dangerous,” said Staples head coach Dan Woog.  “They are worthy champions.”

Staples, now 12-3-4, begins state LL tournament play next Friday.  Game time is 2 p.m. at Loeffler Field.
