The battle of boys soccer defending state champions turned decisively in Staples’ favor today.
The Wreckers – defending “LL” (extra large schools) state champs – shut down the “L” (large school) champion Brookfield, 5-1.
A large Loeffler Field crowd saw Staples explode for three goals in the first 12 minutes, en route to the win.
The Wreckers, now 9-1-2, host equally hot Greenwich (8-1-1) on Tuesday. Game time is 4 p.m. Today’s loss was the first of the season for Brookfield (8-1-2).
The scoring began just 4:30 in. Lorenz Esposito’s shot was saved, but Mikey Scott was positioned well to tap it in.
At 11:12 Esposito picked up a loose ball, then blasted a 30-yard goal.
A minute later it was 3-0. This time Jake Krosse finished, on an even longer and harder rip.
Brendan Lesch, Frankie Bergonzi and Greg Gudis all almost scored before halftime.
The Westporters continued to dictate the tempo and style of play after intermission.
In the 54th minute, Max Hoberman drove into the corner and sliced a cross to Esposito. The sophomore dished off to Steve Smith, who slotted his shot home.
Alex Tonsberg pounced on a loose ball and alertly chipped the keeper for the final Staples tally.
The Bobcats averted a shutout fou minutes from time.
“There was a lot to like,” said head coach Dan Woog.
“Our defense was alert and tight. We moved the ball nicely all over the field. This was a completely unselfish game. Guys looked for teammates, found them, and got balls back in return.
“And the fact that five different players scored speaks volumes. I think everyone had fun.
“This should give us confidence and momentum going forward.”
