Yet Another Shutout for Staples Girls Soccer

The fans were bundled up in layers against the cold at today’s CIAC State Tournament quarterfinal match as they watched the Staples Lady Wreckers shutout Norwalk’s Brien McMahon 3-0 at home. Both teams spent much of the first period cold as well, but that all changed when junior standout Autumn Smith blasted one past the Senator’s goalkeeper. The second period clock had barely started when the other junior powerhouse, Charlotte Barnes found the back of the net, making the score 2-0. A McMahon self-goal off an attempt by senior Katie Ialeggio brought the final score to 3-0. The semifinals will be Saturday at home, with No. 2-seed Staples facing 10th seed Farmington.
