School Boards Cuts $689,912 from its Proposed Budget

Westport’s Board of Education tonight voted unanimously to cut $689,912 from its proposed 2018-19 operating budget that now stands at $118,222,800, a 3.36 percent increase over the current year.

The reductions were proposed by Schools Superintendent Colleen Palmer and presented by Elio Longo, school business administrator.

According to Longo, most of the savings come from a $400,000 reduction in equipment, supplies and facilities projects, all of them to be fast tracked via a current year surplus.

The new budget also includes $245,000 in transportation account savings achieved by a five-year, renegotiated contract with the bus company Dattco.

Employee pricing negotiations also scored $44,912 in workers compensation savings, the administration said.

The new budget is scheduled to be presented to the Board of Finance on Wednesday.
