Ridgefield High School rolled over previously unbeaten Staples 37-6 tonight at Ridgefield in a varsity football FCIAC game.
Staples (3-1), which owned a 130-42 record under 16th-year coach and Ridgefield resident Marce Petroccio, was outplayed by Ridgefield (2-2) from the outset.
On the second play of the game from the Staples’ 12, a bad pitch by Staples quarterback Brendan Pacilio wound up on the ground in the end zone. He fell on it, giving Ridgefield a two-point safety.
On the ensuing free kick, junior Drew Arcoleo cut from the middle to the left sideline and raced 64 yards for a touchdown to put Ridgefield ahead 9-0 just 66 seconds into the game.
The Tigers held and then their initial offensive play went for a 40-yard touchdown by Arcoleo, who broke a tackle at the 25. It was 16-0 with 8:00 left in the first quarter.
Staples got on the board as Pacilio completed a 47-yard scoring pass to Brendan Rankowitz.
The Tigers led 23-7 at the half and added two touchdowns in the second half to complete the rout.
The Wreckers next face Danbury on Oct. 11 at home in the homecoming game.
