A house at 108 Cross Highway is among nine winners of the Westport Historic District Commission (HDC) 2015 Preservation Awards to be presented in a Town Hall ceremony at 7 p.m. on Monday. The HDC said the award will be presented to Rachel Ember and Jeff Porter, owners of the house, known as the Henry Munroe House, circa 1806. The HDC cited the owners for their commitment to the ongoing preservation of this federal-style house “which many of us in Westport thought was doomed to demolition in 2011 before the current owners rescued it.” (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Dave Matlow for WestportNow.com

I’m extremely happy to see this house preserved and feel grateful to Ms. Ember and Mr. Porter for being the caretakers of such an important piece of local and American history. We in New England often choose to ignore the history of slavery and the struggles of African Americans here in the cradle of liberty—to see this home of a freedman, honored and preserved is glorious. I understand this house was possibly also a stop on the underground railroad—another phenomenal point of historical record, if true.
