Police Urge Caution as Students Head Back to School

Westport police have urged motorists to be especially cautious as students head back to school next week and reminded them that the fine for passing a stopped school bus is $460.

Police units are already operating radar and selective enforcement details in school zones and along school bus routes, said John Parisi, public safety officer.

In addition to the extra patrols, officers will be assigned to follow school buses for violations and to position themselves to observe violations at certain bus stops, he said.

Parisi urged residents to allow extra time for travel in the morning.

“Until the students, parents, and bus drivers get their routines down, the process may take longer for the first week or so,” he said.

Schools welcome back students on Aug. 27.

  1. I am one of the bus drivers for the town and I hope that all who read this PLEASE do not drive through our stop signs.I drive on one of the main streets in town and I have turned in many plate numbers for this very thing.I see cars coming toward me and when I turn on my amber lights I see many drivers who speed up so they won’t have to stop when I turn on my stop lights and stop sign comes out.We are driving your children to and from school and do appriciate those who do stop but, shame on you for the ones who know what have done and it does not seem to bother you. Some of you even have even waved with the one finger. You will have to live with yourself if a child is injured or killed by your irresponsibility.
