The play by Theresa Rebeck, creator of NBC’s business drama “Smash,” offers a backstage comedy about a Hollywood action star making his Broadway debut amid tensions with his understudy. It opens Saturday, Aug. 18 with previews starting Tuesday, Aug. 14.

The cast includes Eric Bryant as Harry. Bryant won the Connecticut Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Actor in a Play for his role in the Playhouse’s “The Invisible Hand.”

Also cast is Brett Dalton as Jake. Dalton plays Agent Grant Ward on the ABC series, “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” for which he received a Teen Choice Award as Best Male Breakout Star. Andrea Syglowski plays Roxanne. Syglowski was the recipient of the Robin Williams Scholarship at The Juilliard School.

Playhouse officials say the symposium, which is free and open to the public, will engage actors in a conversation with David Kennedy, playhouse associate artistic director, as well as the play’s director. Kennedy previously directed a production of “The Understudy” at the Wilma Theater in Philadelphia.

The Sunday Symposium Series is supported, in part, by the White Barn Program of the Lucille Lortel Foundation
