Developer Robert Haroun, head of SIR Development, said today he expects to close on the 1.625-acre property at 1480 Post Road East in the next two weeks.

The property will be developed into 17 one-bedroom units and 15 two-bedroom units, including seven affordable units, he said.

A demolition permit has been approved, and foundation work will begin in June. Construction completion is scheduled for the end of 2021, Haroun said.

A year ago, the Planning and Zoning Commission (P&Z) considered a text amendment which cleared the way for the development.

At the time, Mary Young, P&Z director, said development of the property “may be considered a win-win-win for the developer, the Cottage Lane neighbors who are most directly affected, as well as the Town of Westport.”

She said a multifamily development will enhance property values for both the owner of 1480 Post Road East and surrounding property owners, as the existing site is underutilized, nonconforming in its use as a contractor’s yard and unattractive as it is barren of any defined landscaping.

In a staff report, she said not only will the development enable the permanent abandonment of a nonconforming use, but it will be “more in keeping with the character of Westport as it includes landscaping providing screening and buffering between it and the single-family neighborhood located on Cottage Lane.”
