Pickleball, the latest trend to hit Westport’s Compo Beach, is generating attention with two courts that were installed by the Parks & Recreation Department this summer. According to Tom Lowrie, Westport’s official ambassador of the USAPA (United States of America Pickleball Association) the courts opened last weekend and are open to the public as long as players have all the equipment, primarily a ball and paddles. Lowrie said Parks & Rec provides the net. Pickleball, invented in Bainbridge Island, Washington in 1965 is a paddle sport that combines many elements of tennis, badminton and ping-pong. The USAPA says pickleball is now America’s fastest growing sport, “especially among the chronologically endowed.” (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Dave Matlow for WestportNow.com
