Westport’s PAL football participants began practicing under new temporary lights this week at P.J. Romano Field and Doubleday Field behind Saugatuck Elementary School on Riverside Avenue. (Pictured is Thursday night’s session.) The Planning and Zoning Commssion last week cleared the way for the lights after years of litigation with neighbors. The lights have been rented for a two-month period at a cost of $8,500 according to Carmen Roda, director of youth sports. He said the lights “let us teach the kids football in a safe environment” and expressed thanks to neighbors for coming to a resolution allowing youngsters to practice safely.
