Members of Westport’s Staples High School Cross Country team take the damage caused by the remnants of Tropical Storm Ernesto in stride as they approach a downed telephone pole on Berndale Drive at Leslie Lane late Monday. Residents along Leslie Lane were less sanguine about the situation. Along with many other Westport residents blocked on dead-end streets, they were unhappy that they were prevented from driving out of Leslie Lane from Saturday at about 5 p.m. until 4 p.m. Monday. Town officials said the delays in clearing the roads were caused by the need for confirmation by CL&P that the wires involved were not energized and the widespread number of trees and wires down.
