The state Department of Consumer Protection, Drug Control Division said it a has approved a medical marijuana dispensary facility license for Bluepoint Wellness of Westport, LLC at 1460 Post Road East, the former site of Coco Spa.

The Westport Planning and Zoning Commission (P&Z) cleared the way for the Westport facility in June 2017 by approving a text amendment permitting no more than two medical marijuana dispensaries in Westport. This June is selected Bluepoint Wellness from among five applicants.

The other four were denied for reasons of public safety, traffic, inadequate parking, being too large a facility or their proximity to residential zones or public facilities.

“According to the terms of the approved P&Z permit, a number of conditions will need to be met by the applicant before a dispensary may open,” said First Selectman Jim Marpe in a statement.

“Town and public safety officials anticipate working very closely with the proprietors of the business to develop a close working relationship, to understand and coordinate security plans, and to encourage Bluepoint Wellness to act as a good neighbor, insuring the safety of all visitors and residents of Westport.”

Bluepoint’s owner, David Lipton, told the P&Z in April: “I feel I am in a unique position to help patients in Westport.”

He described himself as a lifelong Westporter and founder and CEO of Advanced Grow Labs, which has a 41,000-square-foot facility in West Haven growing marijuana for medical purposes.

He said he intended to establish a dispensary in 4,207 square feet at the site of the former Coco Spa.

The state said nine new selected dispensary facilities will receive their licenses upon payment of their license fee and submission of final documentation, which must occur within 14 days.

After that, facilities will begin construction and will open as they become ready to serve patients.
