Martha Stewart Asks Help From Friends

Westport’s Martha Stewart is asking for a little help from her friends to stay out of prison.

The Web site www.gawker.com said she sent a letter to about 100 of her closest pals asking them to write letters saying nice things about her to Manhattan Federal Judge Miriam Goldman Cedarbaum, who could sentence Stewart to 10 to 16 months in June.

“Many people have inquired as to whether they can help by writing to Judge Cedarbaum about my sentence,” she wrote in the letters dated March 12 and bearing the address of her Turkey Hill Road South home.

“If you would be so kind to write such a letter, please include your opinion of my character, my work ethic, my integrity and my probity.”

Stewart requested that her friends back up their opinions with “any memorable experiences you have had with me.”

She also asked that the character reference letters be sent to her lawyers, who plan to pass them along to Cedarbaum.

Stewart concluded: “I deeply appreciate all of your good wishes and encouragement. Of course, your support means a great deal to me and my family.”

The letter was signed, “Cordially, Martha.”

  1. If all of Marthas fans were to write a letter to the judge, she would be busy for weeks reading of the wonderful contributions you have made to our lives,As a teacher there is not one who comes close to your caring and effort. We hope and pray that you will be shown mercy.Community service should be the only punishment.

  2. While I do not want to pass judgement, Mrs. Steward was fully aware of what she did wrong and she should now have the guts to accept the punishment. Laying is an American deseas and the root cause for the moral decay in the USA. The rich people feel that they are above the law, like all the CEO’s in America, well, they are not. A little lying is just as bad as a big lie. The less fortunate people of America go to prison for stealing food in a 7/11 store because they have nothing. Mrs. Stewart should stop wasting taxpayers money and get on with her life. America does not need Mrs. Stewart to tell them what is good in life. Americans can think for themselfs and make choices. I do wish her all the best and if she goes to prison, she can do a lot of good there too.

  3. She has given me SO many ideas on her shows & her magazines. I think she got a HUGE raw deal! She’s a hard-line business woman, but that doesn’t make her a criminal. Please reconsider the felony conviction down to a misdameanor. Thank you, Sue Taylor Groveland, IL

  4. i truly feel that if the evidence portrays the fact that she is guilty she should pay the penalty. im sure that if it was me i would probably end up in a striped suit . lrt the punishment fit the crime

  5. For years Martha Stewart taught ordinary people how to live a more enjoyable lifestyle, a lifestyle privileged by the affluent. Needy school children could benefit from Martha’s expertise. She could teach parents how to prepare nutritious food for their children, as there is a high correlation betwen nutrition and learning in school children.
As an educator I plead that Martha perform community service, on behalf of school children, in the field of nutrition rather than waste her time in jail. This punishment would be more suitable to her crime, in accordance with Dostoevsky’s “Crime & Punishment”.
