However, many names are repeated, possibly because they had more than one type of account at the Madoff firm, which is in liquidation.

The 162-page filing made in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Manhattan doesn’t list the amount each client invested with the firm owned by the securities dealer allegedly involved in a $50 billion Ponzi scheme.

The chief compliance officer of Resnick Investment Advisors LLC in Westport, which is on the list, said in an e-mail that his firm isn’t directly invested with Madoff but received client statements “for clients of ours who … were Madoff clients,” The Wall Street Journal said.

Also on the list was the Westport National Bank, which has said it acted only as a custodian for customers investing with Madoff.

The list consists of people who either were identified as customers in Madoff’s records or who identified themselves as customers by contacting the trustee or Securities Investor Protection Corp., the Journal said quoting the filing in bankruptcy court.

The SIPIC is a securities-industry group formed to help customers of failed brokerages.

The list does not appear to include the thousands of customers who invested in the Madoff firm through so-called feeder funds run by Fairfield Greenwich Group and many other firms, the newspaper said.

It was complied by AlixPartners LLC on behalf of the trustee, who enlisted the firm’s help with mailing a claim form to “each person who, from the books and records of BLMIS (Madoff’s firm), appeared to have been a customer” with an open account during the year prior to Dec. 11, the date of Madoff’s arrest.

The firm compiled a list after reviewing Madoff’s books to find names and addresses of the customers and from reviewing phone calls and e-mails from customers to the trustee and SIPC, the Journal said.
