Long Line Outside Tax Collector’s Office

There was a long line today outside the Westport Tax Collector’s office as residents pre-paid property taxes due Jan. 1 and April 1 following passage of tax legislation, which caps property and state tax deductions beginning in 2018. Tax Collector Harry Whiteley stepped out and told waiting residents they could drop off their taxes without waiting if they wished. However, many waited to receive receipts for use with mortgage companies. Residents have until 4:30 p.m. Friday to pay taxes in person at the office. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Jeff Mayer for WestportNow.com
