The move comes as the library is in the throes of a major renovation.
Created by renowned illustrator Robert Lambdin in 1934, the WPA artwork has been hanging in the library since 1992, after it had been removed from the Saugatuck Elementary School.
Once the mural is deinstalled, it will be transported to Staples High School where it will be staged in the auditorium lobby, library officials said.
The deinstallation is being performed by conservators Halbrook & Hawes LLC assisted by Westport’s Department of Public Works.
“Once the mural is at Staples, Holbrook & Hawes will conduct additional cleaning and conservation before it is positioned in the high school,” said Rachel Reese Pegnataro, library spokeswoman
Town Curator Kathie Bennewitz, assisted by a library team, is overseeing the project.
