Heartbreaker: Staples Boys Soccer Falls on Penalty Kicks

Playing their most intense match of the year, the Staples boys soccer team today got a dramatic goal from Daniel Perez Elorza with just 2:38 to play in a state tournament match at Hall-West Hartford. The blast, assisted by Graham Gudis, tied the score at 1-1. But 20 minutes of overtime failed to deliver a winner. The teams went to penalty kicks, where the upstaters prevailed 5-4. “Soccer is a cruel game,” said Staples head coach Dan Woog. His team outshot Hall 17-10, and thoroughly dominated much of the match. “But I could not be prouder of our guys,” Woog said. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Armelle Daniels for WestportNow.com
