The house at 60 North Ave. (also known as 4 Willow Walk) near Staples High School was demolished today. Owned by the estate of the late Brett Somers the 1¾-story colonial had 2,825 square feet and was situated on a .74-acre property. Partially built in 1889, it changed ownership this month for $1 million. It was the WestportNow Teardown of the Day on Nov. 14, 2007. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Dave Matlow for WestportNow.com

That’s why we’re trying to decide whether our house on Roseville Road should be designated a Historic House. Lots of people know that “this is where the Little Toot author, Hardie Gramatky, used to live” (so they tell me), and I don’t want this to be a teardown one day if we decide to move. I’d love for people to visit to see Dad’s paintings and former studio and illustrations on an Artist Tour years from now. Thanks to the Historic District Commission and some new zoning laws that will permit renovations as long as the house looks the same from the road (which will keep it interesting to drive around Westport), perhaps more and more buyers will be willing to renovate an older home rather than tearing it down. I believe Westport is moving in the right direction if everyone gets involved.
Thank you, Linda. We need more folks with the same determination and appreciation for the character of our town.
Brett’s house, gone! So many hours of succor and friendship, laughter and conversation behind those walls….Westport has lost one of it’s unique characters, and now her house, too! Though far from home, I log in regularly to get my Westport fix – alas, to see this. And she never did get to do her kitchen.
