The first Westport Pops Concert featuring Staples High School vocal and instrumental groups is set for Thursday, June 9, at 7 p.m. at the Levitt Pavilion for the Performing Arts, event planners announced.
This concert, which is planned to be an annual event, marks both the culmination of the Staples school year and its nationally recognized music program, an announcement said.
It also serves as a“pre-season” opening of the Levitt Pavilion’s 2016 summer season, said Thomas Scavone, K-12 chairman of the school system’s music department.
The concert is free, and tickets limited to four per person will be available at noon Wednesday via the Levitt Pavilion website at http://www.levittpavilion.com or by calling Ovationtix at (866) 811-4111.
Modeled after Boston’s iconic Pops on the Esplanade Concert Series, the Westport program will feature popular, classical and contemporary music from the repertoire of the school’s symphonic orchestra, chamber orchestra, jazz band and the Orphenians vocal ensemble.
Scavone said it is being billed as the music department’s “second annual gift to the Westport community,” the first being the annual Candlelight Concert, which celebrated its 75th anniversary in December.
“Since arriving in Westport during the construction of the all-new Levitt Pavilion, we have dreamed of having our students perform on that iconic stage,” Scavone said.
“Through the tireless efforts of the school administration, the Levitt Pavilion team and community members, our shared vision is about to come to life.
“The Pops will give the Westport community another chance to celebrate the musical accomplishments of our students, who have been recognized for the fourth straight year as a National Best Community for Music Education,” he added.
“We look forward to The Pops realizing the marriage of great music, in a great venue, before a great audience. It should be a memorable musical experience under the stars.”
