I’m almost certain that bread can be obtained closer to your home than needing to travel 4+ miles.
The environmental impact of the plastic bag ban vs. petrol usage are two completly seperate environmental issues.
Who is it exactly everyone is mad at for this situation? Seems more like a case of simple frustration in general. Such is life in the free enterprise system…should we endorse a more Socialistic form of business? I think not.
Change is hard and no one likes it. The Landlord will renovate the center (needs it badly) and another type of food retailer will grab it because of its location. Just stand by.
Rich,
Sure, I could have found a very nice loaf of gourmet bread at several places before I got to Stop & Shop. But as I was looking for a loaf of basic Pepperidge Farm white bread, S&S;was the closest place that I was aware of yesterday afternoon.
Many people depended on Shaw’s for the basics and are now being forced to drive further to get some of their daily basics. Call it frustration or anger. It is not a good situation, and falling back on the Free Enterprise vs. Socialism false argument does not negate the fact that many people are inconvenienced by this situation.
Hoping that potential tenants of this space can clearly understand that this market probably does not need another gourmet supermarket, but is in desperate need for a place where people can buy their basic groceries closer to where they live.
John:
You are so right. While shopping in the gourmet store, which my wife and I do often, it is nice to have a place to buy the essentials…like a loaf of Pepperidge Farm white. I just wonder how long this space will remain empty. Yes, I have heard the landlord has secured a tenant…the Fresh Market…but they to are another spin on the gourmet…overvalued…no Pepperidge Farm…shopping experience. Then I have heard rumors that the tenant walked. Who knows??? What is sad is that despite it being a little run down, the people that worked there were always nice and helpful. Forget the environmental aspects which are valid also….It saved us over a half and hour and time is money and you cannot put a price on basic convenience. I also wonder, as I said earlier…where are all those nice employees going to work in this economy???
No question its an inconveinence, no question at all, but its the area in which we reside that drives the types of businesses that set up shop there and the fact is there is no place else along that stretch to put a store such as you seek. Personally I’d rather spend a little more money and/or drive a bit longer than to have a 7-11 somewhere on Post Road East.
The tenant didnt keep his operation up to snuf and the Landlord had every right to not renew the lease. What we should be doing is to be lobbying the Kowalsky Family to look at more reasonable grocery store options. If they listen to the needs of the people and do the right thing, they may very well be rewarded for listening to the community they serve as local business leaders.
Funny side note from my last post regarding Socialsim…my word to type in to submit my post was SOVIET….LOL, and all I meant by that comment was they (Kowalskys) have every right to change the business in their building – right WRONG or indifferent.
Better a supermarket like Shaw’s than no supermarket at all at this location…and 90 more jobs lost in this economy. Who is the real winner? The public? The tenant? The Landlord. The 90 newly unemployed? How about no one!!
Made my first 4+ mile round-trip drive to Stop & Shop today to get a loaf of bread. Something tells me that the environmental benefits of the plastic bag ban will be given back in extra gas used by people who used to make the short-drive to Shaw’s.
This is really quite a ridiculous situation; only one, single, normal (aka. non-gourmet), grocery store, far away from where most of the 26K people in town live.
Hey everyone, Trader Joe’s sells lots of bread at decent prices and it’s two minutes from the old Shaws. For those who live on the “Norwalk” side of town, as I do now, the Stop’N’Shop on Route 7 is a 5-10 minute drive via the Merritt, provided you avoid rush hour.
