Family Needs Prompt Board of Ed Chair’s Resignation

Citing the need to do what is best for her family, Democrat Marjorie Cion announced her resignation tonight as chair of the Westport Board of Education. She said she would take a position as executive assistant to Superintendent Elliott Landon.WestportNow.com Image

Cion, a former PTA leader who was first elected in 2005 and took over as chair a year ago, said “the good news” is that “I will continue to be involved with this amazing school system.” She added, ““Nothing, with the exception of being a mother to my five children, has given me more satisfaction than serving on the board and especially as its chair.”

“It is one of most difficult decisions I have ever made, but I am doing it for my family, and I have no doubt it is the right thing to do,” said Cion, whose husband, Richard, died in March 2007.

A law school graduate, Cion has been working in Stamford but said she has found the commute and the time away from her children too much of a burden. She said among other things she looks forward to being able to watch her children compete in late afternoon sports.

“My children need their mother even though I am not sure they know that,” Cion said. Her children range in age from 12-year-old twins to a 20-year-old son.

Landon led school officials in praising Cion for her service and said she was the standout candidate for the executive assistant position.

Among those congratulating Cion and offering best wishes was First Selectman Gordon F. Joseloff.WestportNow.com Image

“You did the right thing,” he said, adding that family always comes first.

“I look forward to your being down the hall where you will be available for lunches and consultation,” Joseloff said.

Marpe said the board and the Democratic Town Committee will be seeking candidates to fill the Democrat’s vacant seat on the board where they hold a 4-3 majority.

Marpe said those interested in applying for the vacancy should send a letter of interest to the board no later than Dec. 23.

Following Cion’s announcement, the board recessed its meeting to hold a brief reception in her honor.

  1. Marj, Marj I don’t know how you did it all, but you did. Thank you for all you have done for Education in Westport. I think Westport is lucky that that you are still involved with Education.
