Drew Friedman Foundation’s Art Scholarships Needs Based

The Westport Arts Center (WAC) has announced new needs-based art scholarships available to Westport students via the Drew Friedman Community Arts Center Foundation (DFCAC).

A $5,000 award will be given to a high school senior who will attend an arts-based college program in the fall.

WAC officials said seniors can apply for the needs-based scholarship at http://www.westportartscenter.org/education/scholarships. Applications must be received by April 30.

Scholarships are also available for individual weeks at WAC’s summer camp program. Themed weeks for children ages 4 through 12 range from painting to clay to three-dimensional art, officials said.

Applications can be made through the Department of Human Services.

“We look forward to collaborating with the Drew Friedman Community Arts Center Foundation to deliver outstanding arts opportunities to the community,” said Amanda Innes, WAC’s executive director.

“The foundation’s mission to fund art classes and activities for underserved students and young adults is perfectly aligned with the work we do at the Westport Arts Center,” she added.

The late Drew Friedman, a decades long real estate developer and a downtown tour de force in commercial properties, died at 86 in February 2016.

It was announced in December that he left funds to establish the Drew Friedman Community Art Center, which officials said would award $500,000 to promote the arts in Westport and Weston over the next 10 years.
