A demolition permit has been issued for the circa 1850 house at 142 Cross Highway. However collaborative discussions are currently underway between its builder-owners, the Westport Historic District Commission and preservationist architect Michael Glynn to determine if the house can be dismantled and moved to another location. As stated in the HDC’s Aug. 1 letter to the developers, “In the commission’s view, the dismantling of an important historic resource that would otherwise be demolished represents the best possible outcome of all concerned.” The house was featured as the WestportNow Teardown of the Day on July 10. As I look at the teardown photos with tongue in cheek I can’t help but reflect on what the state of the real estate market is here in Westport. I have my house on the market since early July. We continue tear down as if the market is as it was a year ago. Westport is one of the best places to live in the east. What was a great price a year ago is too much now for “such a small house” etc. Our local newspapers are hell bent on publishing long articles by our wonderful local realtors screaming that the sky is falling. Let’s try to remember that the realtor works for the seller. What we have, to some degree, is a self fulfilling prophecy. I can equate this to my business witch is retail…..a customer walks in to the store. I greet the customer….and say….“You know, I think you should come back in a month or two when the market demand is lower and I can sell it to you at a cheaper price. This is not a good time for you to buy.
I’ll see you in six months.” Stop working for the buyer and stop crying in the newspapers. Any agent that would write a full page ad on how the market is in the John is no agent of mine.
