The Connecticut Press Club tonight hosted a talk at the Westport Historical Society by journalist James Lomuscio who has just published a book about the 1940s flooding of the village of Valley Forge in Weston to make way for a Bridgeport Hydraulic Co. reservoir. The publisher of “Village of the Dammed,” University Press of New England, says it tells the story of the “historic rise and fall of one New England town, with sweeping implications for environmentalism and the sanctity of open spaces facing the onslaught of modern development.” Lomuscio is a contributing editor of WestportNow. Several years ago, when the reservoir was extremely low, I took my kids up there and we walked around on the bottom of the reservoir doing amateur archaeology. We found a few foundations, steps, and other ghostly reminders of what was there before. It was absolutely fascinating, and I can’t wait to read the book.
My dad would often drive to the Reservoir during summer dry spells and point out the foundation of his family’s home which was taken for “the public good”. His parents were dirt farmers who had a sideline making charcoal for blacksmiths..
They were told to move on, as any money put forward would go to pay back taxes….
To me it was just another story in one family’s
struggle to keep its head above water, many times unsuccessful, but that’s a story for another day……….
