Concerns Expressed Over Staples Drug Case

Two people questioned during Monday’s Westport Board of Education meeting how school officials handled an incident where several girls were allegedly caught smoking marijuana in the Staples High School bathroom.

Last month police reported an incident where three girls were smoking marijuana in a bathroom, and one of the girls was arrested. Her name was not released because of a new state law.

Josephine Kaye, who has worked as a psychoanalysist, said during Monday’s meeting that there was an independent urine test in the case completed by a local pediatrician on the same day of the incident.

The test came back with a negative result, she said, and the six-day suspension should be removed from the girl’s record. Kaye’s husband, Alan, also addressed the board briefly on the same subject.

Principal John Dodig, however, would not accept the test, she said, because he did not know how the test was administered.

“He simply disregarded objective evidence,” Kaye said. “A fair-minded person would accept objective evidence and back off. (Dodig) will not admit a mistaken position.”

School officials need an impartial review for such cases, she said.

Schools Superintendent Elliott Landon said Wednesday the accusations against Dodig are false.

He would not comment on the specifics of the case, but he said he hopes the woman’s identity is not revealed, especially by her grandparents.

  1. OK, this is meant in fun, and not to slam Jennifer C, who usually writes very well, but these are hard to resist:

    – why were the girls at Staples at the same time as the BoE meeting?

    – Ms Kaye is the cure not the disease: “-ist”.

    – one of the girls is married to a guy named Alan?

    – or if you prefer that Alan is married to Ms Kaye, does that make him qualified to speak on this subject?

More seriously, why can’t the parents admit that these girls were doing something wrong and focus on that, not on how to find ways to make it go away.
