Competition Opens for Sprouting Digital Artists

Submissions are being sought for “Young Shoots,” a digital photography competition for children 8 through 18, organizers announced today.

Sponsored by the Westport Arts Center (WAC) and the Westport Farmers Market, the competition is designed “to demonstrate their creativity through the digital photography medium, and to showcase the local color and vibrancy of the Westport Farmers’ Market,” said Leslie LaSala, WAC spokeswoman.

The submission deadline in Aug. 14, and winners will be announced Aug. 25. All photographs must be or have been taken at the Westport Farmers Market.

Among the jurors are: Lillie Fortino, WAC’s director of education for the Westport Arts Center; Stephanie Webster, editor-in-Chief of CTbites.com; and Eileen Sawyer, local photographer and Farmers Market board member.

The jurors will select winners in three age groups: 8 to 10; 11 to 14; and 15 to 18.

LaSala said that all selected photographers will have their work showcased in a gallery-like setting at Sugar & Olives restaurant. First place winners will receive a $100 cash prize and will also have the opportunity to lead a food photo shoot with local chef Bill Taibe, second place winners in each category will win a $50 cash prize.

The public will also have the opportunity to vote online for their favorite submissions beginning Aug. 20, with “Fan Favorite” winners in each age category receiving a one-year membership to WAC and a Farmers Market t-shirt, LaSala said.

“We love working with the Westport Farmers Market and are always so impressed with the quality of work we receive from our young photographers,” Fortino said. “We look forward to seeing this year’s submissions.”

Lori Cochran-Dougall, executive director of the Farmers Market, called the competition “a perfect combination of community organizations partnering in creative impactful ways.”
