Sally White, the loved and respected owner of Sally’s Place record shop at 190 Main St, in Westport –- a haven for jazz and blues music lovers and musicians since 1985 –- said today she is calling it quits sometime this summer. She said the Internet and the state of the economy did in her business. “I think I’m going to cry,” she said as word spread she is closing.“I need to figure out what to do with this place. There’ve been so many callers asking if it’s so.” (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Dave Matlow for WestportNow.com

Sally is one of a kind … never been anyone like here, never will be again … no better place to find great jazz, and some great dusty nuggets. She has been a part of the downtown scene for a lot longer, too … locals are trying to re-invent downtown Westport, and that’s great … but with out Sally’s Place on the map, downtown won’t be as special.
Sally, you’re the best!
I feel partly responsible for this as I have not visited Sally for a while, but a wander through Sally’s Place has been one of my favorite retail experiences over the years. Mainly because it has been more like going into a library with a VERY knowledgeable librarian!
Selfishly, we can’t insist that she stay on fighting the beast that is our music industry of today, but I have to tell you from my heart, that our town, our lives will not be the same knowing that is there no longer that little slice of Westport’s Tradition, called Sally’s Place. Her being here make us proud to be here, as well.
A great loss for Westport. Ever since she started the record section of Klein’s on Main Street and then at Sally’s Place, she has been the main source of music in Westport. She has supplied our family with many wonderful sounds.
Sally, we will miss you and will think of you often as we enjoy what you have given us. All the best.

Sorry to read this news. Sally was as much a musicologist as she was a record shop. I will miss shopping there.
Loved to go in there. I remember going in and asking Sally “Have you seen that Lincoln ad on TV? Do you know the tune?” Of course she did. What a gem she has been and I’m sure a special part of many kid’s musical education here in Westport.
