Consumers Petroleum has acquired the convenience store, Citgo gas and service station at Westport’s 786-788 Post Road East for $1.6 million, according to the Trumbull-based company. The Town Hall transaction record shows the land sale was valued at $900,000. After 80 years in one family, the service station was put up for sale last October. (See WestportNow, Oct.10, 2012) It was founded in the early 1930s by Joe DeMattia. According to Ken Paolini, a 22-year staff member, the new owners will take over in “three to six months or maybe even a year from now” and plan to eliminate the service bay, offering self-service gas plus a large convenience shop. FYI: this station has NEVER had a convenience store and should not be allowed to have one in the future.
Of course, our P&Z will allow anything that increases commerce and traffic.
Fact is the gas station portion of this property is in the General Business District and is a non-conforming use. Therefore allocating a portion of the structure which is now used for auto repair to marginal quality food sales can be argued as a reduction of a
non-conforming use. Question is will your gas smell like bread or will your bread smell like gas? In my mind anyone who would mix food and gas doesn
The bigger problem is the decreased number of service bays in town to fix cars. By P&Z rule they can only be in certain parts of town. These current “non conforming places” once gone cannot come back.
We are not going to have anyone in town fixing cars soon and that will make it more difficult all around.
If Dan is right and there was no store there, then they should not get one and be persuaded to keep the service bay. We need people in town to fix cars.
