Adam Rosen, principal of Bedford Middle School, informed parents of Szabo’s leave in an email today, a day after news of the incident became public even though it occurred last week.

According to the Waterbury Republican-American newespaper, Szabo, 49, struck a 71-year-old man after he verbally confronted her for parking in a “no parking” area at 775 Main St. South.

An on-scene investigation, including interviews with witnesses, found that Szabo hit the man multiple times with an open hand, the newspaper said.

She was charged with second-degree breach of peace and released on a $500 bond. She is scheduled to appear in state Superior Court in Waterbury on Wednesday, Dec. 11.

Szabo has been principal of CMS since 2004. She has been working at Bedford as a “principal on special assignment,” while CMS is undergoing renovations.

Priot to Westport, she was principal for five years at Griswold Elementary School.
