Westport resident Alison Tane had a hole in one on the eighth hole today during the rainy morning of round one of the Longshore Women’s Golf Association final Major, The Fall Cup. She used a seven iron from the white tees measuring 123 yards to ace the par 3. “It is one of the most exciting days of my life” she said to her competitors Yvonne Dougherty and Patty Kondub. This is Tane’s first hole in one in her 30-plus years of golf, and it also ends a three-year drought for this achievement in the LWGA. Bobby Valentine: Lucky Fella

Bobby Valentine, the Stamford native who has had a storied career as a professional baseball player and manager, told the Westport Rotary Club today that much of his success can be attributed to luck and being in the right place at the right time. Valentine, now athletic director of Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, also said in response to questions that he is in favor of instant replay instituted in Major League Baseball this year (“It helps because in the end we want to get it right”) and that on balance higher player salaries have made managing more difficult (“everyone now feels they’re special.”) (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Dave Matlow for WestportNow.com
