Staples Parents Donate $15,000 for Lights for Possible Football Semifinal

With a new request for permanent lights for the Staples football field still to be decided, Staples football parents have pledged $15,000 to pay for temporary lights if Staples hosts a semifinal championship night game Nov. 30.

Disclosure of the gift from the Staples Gridiron Club Inc. was made by Superintendent of Schools Elliott Landon in a memorandum to Board of Education members distributed today in advance of the board’s Monday night meeting.

Landon said if Staples is victorious in its Thanksgiving Day game against Fairfield’s Warde High School, it will host the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic League (CIAC) semifinal game on Tuesday, Nov. 30.

He said CIAC rules mandate that the semifinal and final football games be played on lighted fields to maximize attendance and revenues. He asked the Board of Ed to authorize asking town planning boards for permission to erect the temporary lights.

Staples Boys Soccer Season Ends in Semifinals

Everything went right for Newtown—ranked eighth in the nation—and nothing went right for Staples tonight, in the state LL soccer tournament semifinal in Danbury.

The Nighthawks got two goals in the first half, then tightened the noose in the second half en route to a 7-1 win.

“I feel like General Custer,” Staples head coach Dan Woog said. “They did to us what we’ve done to other teams all year long. They hammered us.

“But I told our guys at the end of the game: I’d rather be with you than with any other team.

Staples High School junior Daniel Innamorati, 16, has claimed second place in the intermediate pairs event at the 2005 North Atlantic Regional Figure Skating Championships held in Buffalo, N.Y.

The placement earned the Westport resident and his partner, Natalie Taylor, 16, of New York City, a trip to the United States Junior National Figure Skating Championships, which will be held in December in Jamestown, N.Y.

This will be Innamoratis fourth trip to the Junior Nationals. The North Atlantic Region covers all of New York and New Jersey and a part of Pennsylvania.

Innamoratil has been competing in figure skating since he was 9. Three years ago, he began skating pairs in addition to menҒs freestyle. Last year, he finished fifth at Junior Nationals in pairs with a former partner.
