By Phyllis Groner

Harvey Araton: “one of the most gratifying projects.” Phyllis Groner for WestportNow.com

There may have been a low turnout at the polls today but that definitely was not the case tonight at the Westport Public Library which had a winner in New York Times sports columnist Harvey Araton.

He talked about his book “Driving Mr. Yogi; Yogi Berra, Ron Guidry, and Baseball’s Greatest Gift” in which he tells about the enduring friendship between former Yankees catcher Yogi Berra and pitcher Ron Guidry.

This bond between them, Yankee legends of different generations, Araton explained, began after their playing days were over.  It’s the story of a younger player and his idol who became his best friend.

It is written with love and a great deal of warmth. It is obvious in the telling that author Araton admired both men.

Going for the Gold—at 88

UPDATE Westport’s Paul Green of Saugatuck Rowing Club, at 88 the oldest rower in this year’s USRowing Masters Nationals at Worcester, Mass, is going for the gold today. Even if he doesn’t come in first, as one of three rowers in today’s lightweight singles final for those over age 80, he is assured a getting a medal. “I’m not a great rower, that’s for sure,” Green told the Worcester Telegram. “I’m hoping I can do the 1,000 meters. I’ll just take my time, but the big thing is to do it.” What is even more remarkable is that Green for almost 20 years has had Parkinson’s Disease. He has even started a foundation with the motto, “Nevah Surrendah,” whose goal is to motivate those with Parkinson’s Disease to fight back in order to maintain the highest quality of life possible despite the disease. Final result: Green came in third in 12:05.928, behind Richard A. Kendall, 82, in 6:10.201, and Arnold Lande, 81, in 6:16:629. Contributed photo

Thank You from the Heart

Kathy Ross (c) thanks friends and supporters after unveiling a plaque today dedicating the new halfway house on Westport’s Longshore Golf Course to her late husband, Cliff Ross, a Longshore golfer since he was a youngster. Called Cliff’s Place, the building’s more than $200,000 cost was paid for by a private group, The 9th & 1/2 Hole Committee, whose leadership included Mark Holod (l). Working with nonprofit Friends of Westport Parks & Recreation, the group received numerous donations, including a large one from Westporters Phyllis and David Komansky (3rd, 4th l). First Selectman Gordon Joseloff (r) said the project was an ideal example of a public-private partnership working to achieve town goals. ( (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Dave Matliow for WestportNow.com
