Real Estate Report: Carefully Check the Competition

By Judy Szablak

Special to WestportNow

When selling your Westport home, it’s crucial to gauge how your property stacks up to the competition.

While most of us think of competition as being in the same general price range, we need to also assess the market in other ways as well.

Let’s look at your surrounding neighborhood of similar type homes to yours. Are there homes in your immediate area that are priced much higher or much lower than yours?

When the surrounding neighborhood and homes are priced much higher, you may be able to ask a higher price; however if your home is considered “overbuilt” for the area, you may not get the price you were hoping for. We have a saying in real estate — “The biggest and the best come down to meet the rest.”

RTM Approves Lincoln Street-Riverside Ave. as Historic District

Westport’s Representative Town Meeting (RTM) tonight voted unanimously to designate the Lincoln Street-Riverside Avenue area as a historic district, a move local residents have been pushing for the past decade to help preserve their neighborhood.

The request made by the Historic District Commission to amend the town’s code of ordinances had the support of Save Westport Now, a nonpartisan political organization aimed at preservation, as well as RTM members representing District 2.

“These are my neighbors, and I would like you to support them,” said RTM member Lou Mall. “They’re seeking to preserve and protect their neighborhood, and I would like you to support them.”

“We are a neighborhood that has survived many challenges,” said Tina Torraco, a lead petitioner.
