Association Head: Morningside Drive Settlement is No Win
By James Lomuscio
While Westport officials and some neighbors say three houses are better than 19 condominiums on Morningside Drive, Art Scholler takes a more jaundiced view.
“It’s originally what they wanted, and it’s come full circle,” said Scholler, president of the Greens Farms Association. “The developer used 8-30g as a bargaining tactic.”
An agreement between the town and the developer Morningside Drive Homes LLC, also doing business as Greens Farms Developers LLC, was formally approved in Stamford Superior Court on May 22.
It put to rest a two-year battle heightened by the developer suing the town under the state’s affordable housing statute 8-30g.

Sparkly Soul, a sports fashion accessories store, has opened at 72 Main St. in the space formerly occupied by Shoes ‘N More, which recently relocated to Playhouse Square. Owner Dari Herman (above), a former sports and entertainment corporate lawyer, relocated to Westport from New York two years ago with her husband Steven, a Westchester-based chiropractor. “We’ve been operating our business under the Sparkly Soul name (http://www.sparklysoul.com) for over eight years supplying major sports participation events with logo products especially featuring unique head bands at the Boston and New York Marathons,” she said. WestportNow Teardown of the Day: 31 Sherwood Drive
![]()
An application for a permit to demolish the house at Westport’s 31 Sherwood Drive, in the Compo Hill area, is in process. Built in 1930, the one-story bungalow has 844-square feet, is situated on a .1-acre property and changed ownership this month for $885,000. Because the house was built more than 50 years ago, the application will be reviewed by the Westport Historic District Commission. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Dave Matlow for WestportNow.com
Honoring Our Heritage: 6 Watch Hill

The owners of the house at 6 Watch Hill, off Compo Road North, are the newest recipients of a Westport Historical Society (WHS) historical plaque. Bob Weingarten (r), WHS plaque historian, presented the plaque identifying it as the Ida E. Violet House c.1923, to Thomas and Karen Engelke, owners since 2016. According to Weingarten, the house was built on what had been a nine-acre property that was part of the Lewis H. Whitney homestead. The brick attachment to the house is an 1880s-built onion barn, he said. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Dave Matlow for WestportNow.com

Tax Collector: Taxes Due July 1
Even though all tax bills have yet to go out, Tax Collector Harry Whiteley reminded residents that first quarter real estate taxes, personal property taxes, motor vehicle taxes and sanitary sewer use and assessment charges are due July 1.
Taxpayers have until Aug. 1 to pay taxes without penalty. Accounts will be subject to an 18% (1.5%/month) penalty charge if paid late. Minimum interest charge is $2.
Failure to receive a bill does not abate the charges or interest, Whiteley said.
Real estate taxes, personal property taxes, motor vehicle taxes and sanitary use and assessment bills may be paid by credit card, debit card, or direct withdrawal from a checking account online at https://www.westportct.gov/ and choosing “Pay Taxes Online” from the homepage.
Real Estate Report: How to Respond to ‘Off Year’ Market

And what is very clear about the real estate market in Westport, or any other town for that matter, is if your home is not being shown as often as it should, or not receiving any offers, it’s priced too high for what the market will bear.
Your agent should be able to give you an idea as to how many showings to expect on a weekly or monthly basis, based upon their knowledge of the market.
In some instances, one may want to “test” the market, but the danger is testing the market for too long, which ends up costing money and time for the seller. Potential buyers for a specific property will not even look at the home if they deem it overpriced.
