Business partner David Fite said Shavell suffered a fatal brain hemorrhage after slipping and striking his head Wednesday morning, according to the Fite Shavell website.

Shavell began his real estate career at age 19, and by age 25 had opened his own agency, Riverside Shavell in Westport, where he was raised.

Over the next 11 years, he built it into one of the state’s most successful independent agencies, selling luxury properties in Connecticut and The Hamptons in New York. His celebrity clients included Robert Redford, Martha Stewart and Keith Richards, according to Fite Shavell’s website.

Real Estate Report: Market Fairly Intact After Sandy

By Judy Szablak

Hurricane Sandy left its toll on Westport’s residents, and left just a small mark on the real estate market.

Just under 6 percent, or 17 single family homes were either withdrawn or canceled from the market within the last week, along with 15 rental properties.

While that may sound fairly high, we are still consistent with inventory year-over-year. The 293 homes currently for sale nearly mirrors last year’s inventory of 291 available properties during the same week.

One question that arises following a storm and subsequent property damage is what happens to homes that were under deposit that sustained any type of loss?

Preservation Award Winner: 8 Colonial Road

Among the nine winners of the Westport Historic District Commission 2012 Preservation Awards scheduled to be presented in a Town Hall ceremony at 7 p.m. on Monday is the house at 8 Colonial Road. The HDC said the award is being given in recognition of the reconstruction of the house, c. 1927, with sensitivity to the mass and scale of the original streetscape of the historic Greens Farms Congregational Church neighborhood. It is an example of how a small modest house can be successfully preserved, expanded and adapted to the needs of a modern family on a small parcel of land, the HDC said. Rather than being demolished and replaced with a new oversized house, the owner demonstrated sensitivity to the scale of the existing neighborhood. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Dave Matlow for WestportNow.com

Preservation Award Winner: Spotted Horse

Among the nine winners of the Westport Historic District Commission 2012 Preservation Awards to be presented in a Town Hall ceremony at 7 p.m. on Monday, is the house at 26 Church Lane now occupied by the Spotted Horse restaurant. The HDC said the award is being given in recognition of its “adaptive reuse, a notable example of how diligent collaboration between property owners and town review entities can result in a successful outcome for all parties involved, most particularly, for the people of Westport.” This historic house, c. 1808, was originally sited on the corner of Post Road East and Church Lane, where the Westport Bank and Trust building, now Patagonia, currently stands.  It served as a prominent feature in the town center as depicted in many paintings of early Westport.  In 1924, when the bank building was constructed, the house was moved further east to its current site. In recent years, commercial development pressure threatened the destruction of the house. However, after extensive discussions with the HDC/ARB Joint Committee, the owners decided that the most appropriate redevelopment of this property was to find a way to renovate and adaptively reuse this historic house as part of a larger project that includes the building that now houses Urban Outfitters.
