Comings & Goings: Mansion Clam House Closes
![]()
The Mansion Clam House, 541 Riverside Ave., is closed. Multiple phone calls to the restaurant are answered with a recording that the mailbox is full and cannot take messages. The sign over the front door is gone and the shades are drawn. The ownership of the iconic restaurant in Westport’s Saugatuck section attracted notoriety in 2012 when a now former owner, Soozie Folsom, pleaded guilty to embezzling $1.3 million from three charitable foundations when working as a financial manager of a Westport-based accounting firm. (See WestportNow Aug. 1. 2013) According to the restaurant website, which makes no mention of it being closed, the restaurant has been there since 1958 on the site of a former “fried clam shack.” The property, which includes the adjoining Julian’s Brick Oven Pizza, changed hands in April for $2.1 million. The listing said the building was built in 1900. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Dave Matlow for WestportNow.com

Interestingly enough, we seem to be seeing more and more transitional finishes in these new homes, and the style also appears to be resonating very well with buyers.
The term “transitional” refers more to the interior decor, and is further expressed by bright whites, cool grays, and a perfect blend of traditional style with a very slight contemporary flavor, which translates to a sophisticated and timeless ambiance.
Currently, there are 68 homes on the market that were built in either 2013 or 2014, and these homes have an average listing price of $3,004,243.

After 25 years at 645 Post Road East, Patio.com, the outdoor furniture and patio accessories store, has relocated to a new retail building at 919 Post Road East at the intersection of Cedar Road and near the Sherwood Diner. The site until 2010 was home to the Cedar Brook Café, said to be the nation’s oldest, continuously operating gay bar, which closed after 71 years. Westporter Phil Ross, co-owner of Patio.com with his older brothers David and Mitch, said he decided to relocate when the new owners of its former location doubled the rent. “Even though our new space, 4,000 square feet, has about 25 percent less square footage than our former location, we are very pleased to remain on Post Road East,” he said. Ross said Patio.com, which first opened in Westport in 1980, has since expanded to 13 locations in Connecticut, New York, Florida, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Maryland.
