Four Staples High School students were recently awarded a state “2006 Challenge to Educational Citizenship Award” for their club Heart and Soul. The Westport students are (l-r) Jillian Ugol, Elizabeth Marshman, Molly Hennessy and Alie Schreiber. More than 125 schools statewide applied for this award, and only 10 schools were selected as finalists. Heart and Soul, consisting of about 20 eager students, is a volunteer club that has served more than 1,000 patients. At Norwalk Hospital, students volunteer on the maternity ward to bake cookies for patients. At Haven Health Center of Westport, volunteers arrange and hold activities for patients.
