Mitchells Merging With Long Island Menswear Store

Marsh’s, the Huntington menswear store that has outfitted Long Islanders for 80 years, has agreed to merge with Mitchells/Richards, the owner of two luxury clothing stores in Westport and Greenwich, the Long Island newspaper Newsday reported today.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed, including whether the Marsh family, now in its third generation of ownership, will retain a financial stake in the business.

The store will continue to be called Marsh’s and Ron Marsh, who runs the store, will remain at the helm, but will be joined there by Chris Mitchell, the newspaper said.

The merger combines the $70 million in annual sales from Mitchells/Richards’ two stores with Marsh’s $9 million revenues.

Another Owner for the Old Westport Bank & Trust Co. as Hudson is Sold

The old Westport Bank & Trust Co., which occupied a landmark building in the town’s center for decades before being acquired in 1996, is getting a new owner with today’s announcement of the sale of Hudson United Bancorp Inc. to TD Banknorth Inc.

TD Banknorth, a New England banking company, said it has agreed to buy Hudson United for $1.9 billion in cash and stock to expand in the Northeast.

The acquisition is TD Banknorth’s first purchase since Canada’s Toronto-Dominion Bank paid $4 billion for a 51 percent stake in the Portland, Maine-based company four months ago.

Hudson United took over Westport Bank & Trust Co. and its six-branch Fairfield County franchise in 1996 for almost $69 million through its then-owned Lafayette American Bank. It renamed the bank with its own name in 1999.

Westport’s Pequot Capital Management Hires John Mack

Westport’s Pequot Capital Mangement said today it has hired Wall Street veteran John Mack as chairman of the $6.5 billion hedge fund.

His appointment ends months of speculation that he was waiting in the wings to take the helm at Morgan Stanley, where former executives have been pressing for the ousting of chief executive Philip Purcell.

The rumors persisted despite his insistence that he had no involvement with the rebels. He was president of Morgan Stanley in 1997 when it merged with Dean Witter Discover but quit after he was outmaneuvered by Purcell.

Mack was later recruited by Credit Suisse First Boston and successfully revitalized the investment bank, earning the nickname Mack the Knife for his cost-cutting plans. But he left after a clash over strategy with Credit Suisse’s Zurich leadership.

As steam rose from the simmering wok in the kitchen this morning, Johnny Wong was out in the alley alongside his restaurant, The Ships Corner Chinese Take-out, to supervise the placement of a dumpster. After 20 years in the heart of Westport’s downtown at 23 Jesup Road, the restaurant will close for the last time tonight at 10. 04280501ShipsCornerClose.jpg

The woks, pots, and pans will be washed one last time, Wong said, before being tossed into the dumpster Friday.

“I lost my lease, and five weeks ago the landlord sent me a letter that I would have to be out,” said Wong. “On Monday I’m going to give the key to the landlord.

“My customers, they’re all hurt,” he added, tapping his chest. “A lot of customers are looking for a place for me to stay in Westport.”

For the past 18 months since Wong’s lease from Greenwich-based Win Proprties, Inc. expired, his business has been surviving on a month-to-month basis. Wong says he has paid a total of $5,000 a month in rent and taxes, an amount he is sure will climb in the event he finds another location in Westport.

Chalk up another job for Westport homeowner Martha Stewart six weeks after being released from prison. Her media company has signed a four-year deal to start a 24-hour radio satellite channel worth $30 million to the company.

The new channel on Sirius Satellite Radio will be aimed at women and will feature Stewart’s trademark cooking, gardening and entertaining programming.

For Sirius, the deal with Stewart is the most recent effort to ramp up its programming slate to compete with its much larger rival in the satellite radio business, XM Satellite Radio Holdings.

Last year Sirius signed radio host Howard Stern to a five-year, $500 million deal starting in 2006.

Domenic Condoleo always wanted to be a soccer player, but in 1959 the native of Calabria, Italy, took up a friend’s offer to become a part-time tailor at Mitchells of Westport.

He went full-time a year later and has been there ever since. On Saturday friends and customers will gather at Mitchells to honor him on his 45th anniversary with the store.

It was a great day when Dad hired Domenic,” said store owner Bill Mitchell. ӓI dont know what weҒd do without him. He has got to be the most important person we have.

Now, Condoleo, the father of two grown sons, personally fits some of the best known executives in Fairfield and Westchester Counties who ask for him by name. Store officials say some clients refuse to be fit by any other tailor.
