WestportNow.com Image
A new restaurant, Moja, featuring Asian and South American cuisine, is making progress toward its planned opening around mid-October at Westport’s 12 Wilton Road, according to owner Tom Linell (c) of Weston. The restaurant’s general manager, Marc Katzenberg (l) was prior owner of the Katzenberg Kafe, 22 Main St., which he operated for five years until 2007 when he sold it. (it eventually closed around New Year’s Day in 2009.) Moja’s chef, Danbury resident Rick Demers (r), a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., said the restaurant will have a full service bar in addition to indoor seating for 50 with seating for an additional 30 outside. Linell said the 1,200 square feet restaurant will “serve healthy food, it will be fun and uniquely different.”  He said he chose the Westport location because “we want to be part of the development of the west side of the river.” (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Dave Matlow for WestportNow.com

The sports memorabilia shop, Legends of the Game, 1765 Post Road East, has closed. “There is just not enough traffic in that shopping strip for our kind of business,” said owner Michael Riccio. He said that he and his son Michael Jr. have no plans for further ventures in the retail field. “We will continue to focus on operating fundraisers for nonprofit organizations to whom we provide sports memorabilia for silent auctions,” he said. Prior to opening the shop at 1765 Post Road East in May 2011, Legends of the Game operated at 381 Post Road East in the Compo Shopping Center but closed in June 2010. How could Connecticut’s unemployment rate have worsened significantly in July when the state gained more than 5,000 jobs last month?

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy called out the Department of Labor today, questioning the jobless numbers it released in its latest report.

Based on one survey that estimates payroll jobs in businesses, the department concluded that 5,100 new jobs were created.

And a second survey, which counts unemployed household-by-household, found that the ranks of unemployed rose by 8,600 people in July.

Jacadi children’s clothing store, 24 Taylor Place, is closing after eight years at its current location and will reopen next week as Chic Jolie, a women’s apparel shop, according to owner Alla Ionescu. Fairfield resident Ionescu said she had operated two Jacadi shops—the one in Westport and one in Greenwich that was sold to new owners in 2007.  The Greenwich store still operates under the Jacadi name. “Our contract as a Jacadi franchise ended and we decided not to renew it,” she said. “Our new shop, Chic Jolie, not a franchise, will carry multiple French brands of women’s apparel and accessories.” She said that the lease at the present location runs for another seven years. By James Lomuscio

Malloy made his comments following a noon news conference in Stamford at 15 Harbor Point Road overlooking the 14 waterfront acres where Bridgewater, one of the world’s leading hedge funds, plans to erect a 750,000-square-foot facility.

The project, which Malloy said will create up to 1,000 new jobs over the next decade, will also mean the transfer of most of the company’s 1,225 Westport jobs to Stamford.

“Listen, I love Westport, but we had to keep these people in Connecticut,” said Malloy, noting that Bridgewater officials had been exploring other states, specifically New Jersey. “And a lot of their people work in Westport.”

Joseloff: Bridgewater Move is ‘Bittersweet News’

Westport First Selectman Gordon Joseloff said today that news that Westport-based Bridgewater Associates intends to move its corporate headquarters to Stamford is “bittersweet news.” Here is the text of his statement:

First Selectman Gordon Joseloff: “disappointing…but good economic news for Connecticut.”  Dave Matlow for WestportNow.com

“This is bittersweet news for Westport in that we will potentially lose a majority of Bridgewater’s more than 1,200 jobs to Stamford but retain them in the State of Connecticut.

“I was told in advance by the governor’s office of the announcement and also discussed it this morning with Bridgewater Associates Co-Chief Executive Officer Dave McCormick who reached out to me to provide some details.

“My understanding is that this is a long-range plan with construction not expected to be completed for at least five years. Mr. McCormick said it is likely that even after the move that Bridgewater will possibly retain some presence in Westport both at its Glendenning-Ford Road complex and the Nyala Farms office complex.
