The closure came “10 years and one day since I bought it,” said owner Kevin Burns, who took over from the predecessor Mooring Restaurant on Jan. 8, 2003.

He said that when he took over the Mooring, it had been closed for about six months and then reopened as River House on June 9, 2003.

“It was a nice run,” said Burns. “We had a nice time. However, my life in the restaurant business is over. It’s time for a new brand.”

John’s Best Pizza, 361 Post Road West, will close on Jan. 20 or 21, according to Dino Avellino, owner since 1980 of the restaurant that dates to 1967. “I’ve been on a month-to-month lease for about a year but now the landlord wants to increase the rent, and I cannot afford it,” said Avellino, who turns 62 next month. “Business is slow but I could survive if it stayed at the old rent.” Avellino said John’s Best pizza restaurant was opened on July 1, 1967 by his cousin, Ralph Sandolo who, now at 84, still owns six other John’s Best Pizza restaurants in Connecticut—Norwalk, Ridgefield, Wilton and Brookfield. “This is the only John’s Best that’s closing,” he said.  Avellino said John’s Best Pizza is one of the three oldest pizza places in Westport—the others are Westport Pizzeria and Angelina’s. Some Connecticut Companies Get Breaks in Fiscal Cliff Deal

By Ana Radelat

www.ctmirror.org

Washington —While lawmakers championed the fiscal cliff deal as the mechanism that keep taxes on the middle class from rising, they also, more quietly, approved special tax breaks that will benefit several Connecticut businesses.

The tax breaks range from credits to rum makers like Diageo to research and development write-offs for large companies like United Technologies.

They all expired at the end of 2011. Now they can be used retroactively for companies’ 2012 taxes and again when they file their 2013 taxes next year. They will cost more than $63 billion this year, according to an analysis by the Joint Committee on Taxation.

Taxpayers for Common Sense identified “Top 10 Fiscal Cliff Tax Fails” among the so-called extenders attached to the legislation Congress approved on New Year’s Day.

Report: Cuts Alone Will Push State Into Recession

By Keith M. Phaneuf

www.ctmirror.org

Balancing the next state budget exclusively with spending cuts could be the final straw that breaks Connecticut’s economic back, pushing it back into recession, the University of Connecticut’s economic think-tank warned today.

The Connecticut Center for Economic Analysis also said that such a move could trigger as many as 25,000 annual job losses between the public and private sectors combined.

“The Connecticut economy is in trouble—deep trouble,” center economists wrote in a report titled, “Averting the Doldrums: Will Connecticut Avoid Recession?”

“If people see the state is not going to sustain key initiatives, then the private sector is going to respond,” Prof. Fred Carstensen, the center’s director, said. “People need to understand that there is a profound connection.”
