Granger at the Movies: ‘Bohemian Rhapsody.’ ‘Hunter Killer,’ ‘Johnny English Strikes Again’

By Susan Granger

Special to WestportNow

Confession: Rock music is not my thing, so perhaps I’m the only person on the planet who didn’t know who Freddie Mercury or Queen was — until now — and Rami Malek’s magnificent performance in “Bohemian Rhapsody” blew me away.

Named after Queen’s innovative, six-minute, genre-melding musical masterpiece, this film chronicles the rise-and-fall of the band’s flamboyant, yet enigmatic frontman.

In 1970, young Farrokh Bulsara was a baggage-handler at Heathrow Airport whose conservative, working-class, Indian Parsee family fled from war-torn Zanzibar to Middlesex, London.

Born with four extra incisors, leading to an obvious overbite, Freddie brazenly told his future bandmates, “More space in my mouth means more range.” Since they needed a lead singer, he was immediately accepted by guitarist Brian May (Gwilym Lee) and drummer Roger Taylor (Ben Hardy) later joined by bassist John Deacon (Joe Mazzello).

Black Duck GoFundMe Page Taken Down

UPDATE A GoFundMe page posted to raise funds from the soon-to-be-closed Black Duck Cafe has been taken down and the donated $5,170 will be returned, said a person knowledgeable about the matter today.

“The employee who started it meant well, but it was not sanctioned,” said the source. The page, which attributed the closing to financial problems, sought to raise $100,000.

Since Tuesday’s announcement that the restaurant will close Sunday after 40 years serving up drinks and food to generations of Westporters, there has been tremendous interest in keeping it open, the source said.

Whether these discussion will go anywhere remains to be seen. While the closing announcement said the restaurant will be closed today and Friday before reopening on Saturday and Sunday for the last time, in fact it is open today and Friday as well.
